During the re-hang project last year we realised that the bells were being damaged by the external clock hammer and chime hammers. It was decided that we should look into the possibility of installing an additional bell in the tower, solely to be used as a chime bell.
With the help of the Keltek Trust we identified a suitable bell from a church in Yorkshire. When the church of St Michael and All Angels in Hudswell has been decommissioned it's single bell was moved on a temporary basis to St Mary's Church, Richmond. It had not been possible to find a church to re-house the bell in Yorkshire so the local PCC agreed to donate the bell to Calstock church.
Once the agreement was made, St Mary's had to get permission for the bell to leave the Diocese of Leeds, whilst in Cornwall we had to draw up plans for hanging the bell, find the necessary funds and get our own permission to install it in St Andrew's. All that has now been achieved and we hope that before too long the bell will be moved from Yorkshire to John Taylor & Co, where a new headstock will be fitted, and thence to Calstock.
